Violence erupts in Edo as activist dies in SARS custody
Civil Rights Groups under the auspices of Talakawa’s Parliament and One Love Foundation have protested against the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) Edo State Command led by SP Rex Makanju over the death of Hamilton Osahenhen Obazee who was allegedly tortured to death by Personnel of SARS.
It must be noted that the said Hamilton Osahenhen Obazee, father of 4 children was arrested on the 6th day of March, 2020 at Megon Guest House and Restaurant , Opposite S&T Barracks, Ugbowo Lagos Road at about 12 noon where he went to charge his phone owing to the epileptic power supply in Edo State. It was said that a team of SARS Personnel led by the Officer in Charge, SP Rex Makanju invaded Megon Guest House in a commando way and arrested almost 20 persons including the Director of the Guest House and some of his members of staff.
The Director and his workers were later released on bail after paying heavily for their freedom.
Addressing Journalists in Benin, the Leaders of the protesters, Marxist Kola Edokpayi castigated the Police for brutalizing Hamilton Osahenhen Obazee that led to his death in their custody and called on the Commissioner of Police CP Johnson Babaunde Kokumo to bring the culprits to book to served as deterrent to other trigger happy officers who take delight in engaging in extra judicial killings.
On his part, the President of One Love Foundation, Patriot Patrick Eholor called on the Inspector General of Police to provide tracking device to the Command to make the job of policing very easy.
He warned the Police not to kill any youth again in the State and called for the redeployment of the Officer in Charge of SARS
On his part, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Admin, DCP Kanayo Valentine promised the protesters that justice will definitely be done. He advised them to transmit a formal petition to the Commissioner of Police for action to be taken immediately.
The protesters promised to embarked upon 10 days protest against SARS until justice prevails.
