The Senate of the University of Abuja has appointed Aisha Maikudi, the institution’s youngest Professor of Law, as the acting Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Maikudi, who specializes in International Law, is currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics. Her appointment was announced at the valedictory Senate meeting on Wednesday, following a nomination. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, confirmed the appointment in a statement.

Prof. Na’Allah noted that Maikudi’s appointment is in a temporary capacity, effective after his tenure ends on June 30, 2024, pending ratification by the Governing Council. Prof. Na’Allah will conclude his five-year leadership term at the institution on that date.

In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed gratitude to the Senate members for their confidence in her. “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me,” she said.

Born on January 31, 1983, Maikudi attended Queens College in Lagos, where she earned her West African Senior School Certificate. She went on to receive an LLB from the University of Reading in 2004, an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005, and a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.

Maikudi joined the University of Abuja as Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and ascended to the rank of Professor in 2022. She made history as the first female Deputy Dean of the university’s Faculty of Law in 2018 and later became the pioneer Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

She has participated in numerous national and international conferences in countries such as the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt. Her extensive research focuses on United Nations Law, and she has published widely in this field.
