Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has received unusual accolades from one of his arch political enemies.

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Obasanjo, who once singled out Lagos State for punitive economic measures, as a hero.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a statement which he signed and made available to Irohinoodua.

He said Obasanjo is an “extraordinary leader and statesman” that made remarkable contributions to Nigeria. Tinubu’s remarks signal the height of liberalism and his large spirit of inclusion compared with leaders Nigeria had in the past.

Tinubu personally signed the tribute amidst speculations that the Presidency has despatched a special gift to the former President taken to his Ota home country.

Tinubu said Obasanjo featured prominently in Nigerian history for the past more than half a century.

Tinubu said “Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story.”

He said Obasanjo served the country meritoriously in the Nigerian Army and played a historic role in ending the Nigerian Civil War when he received the instrument of surrender from the Biafran Army Commander, Col. Philip Effiong.”

He paid tribute to Obasanjo’s leadership across military and civilian governance saying that his role in Nigerian democratic evolution is significant.

He listed the handing over to democratic government in 1979 and his return as an elected president in 1999 as significant milestones.

Tinubu said “During the two eras, General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms and made important decisions that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians.”

He described Obasanjo as “an ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter” who is known for his role in conflict resolution.

He said “Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership.”

He singled out Obasanjo’s for his contributions to national unity and Pan-Africanism.

“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him the grace and strength to live for more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” he said.
