Supreme Court reinstates Wike loyalist, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Nyeson Wike and his supporters in the Peoples Democratic Party,(PDP) have won a major battle again.

On Friday, the Five-person panel of the Supreme Court, in a unanimous judgment has ruled in favour of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the embattled party.

The court said the issues within the party are purely internal matters and that the Court has no need to intervene.

According to the Supreme Court, the issues concerning leadership or membership of a political party is purely the international affairs of such organisations.

The Apex Court said such a matter should not be the business of the Court.

In the lead judgment read by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the Supreme Court said the exceptional circumstances that would have given jurisdiction for the Court to decide on the internal affairs of a political party were missing.

The Supreme Court decided to quash the earlier decision of Appeal Court, Enugu Division.

On December 20, 2024 the Appeal Court in Enugu had ruled in favour of the removal of Anyanwu who was earlier removed by a Federal High Court in Enugu.

The Supreme Court stated that the Federal High Court did not have the prerequisite jurisdiction to have heard the matter instituted by Aniagwu Emmanuel.

Sunday Ude-Okoye has been contesting the position with Anyanwu.

The position became vacant when Anyanwu left to contest for the Imo State Governor, a contest he lost.

However, Ude-Okoye gathered support from different blocs of the party who based their action on the ruling of an Appeal Court sitting in Enugu.

The appellate court had affirmed the removal of Anyanwu by a Federal High Court in Enugu.

The National Secretary position became a contentious issue after Anyanwu left to contest the Imo governorship eelction which he lost.
