Each Senator in Nigeria collects a total of N21m every month, Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South has said.
This comes to N2,289,000,000 billion every month in a country where millions cannot feed daily
In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Hausa Service, Senator Kawu said his monthly salary is approximately N1 million, but that his total monthly package stands at N21 million.
He said of salary he receives every month is less than N1m, if there are cuts, it comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little something as salary.”
This negates the position of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission, (RMFC) which this week said each Senator receives slightly over 1m in one month.
The Senator spoke 24 hours after the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) announced that each of Nigeria’s 109 senators receives a monthly salary and allowance package of N1.06 million.
The RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu had said that the Senators take home an amount disputed by many Nigerians.
Earlier, former Senator Shehu Sanni had said 13m was paid to each Senator every month.
The position of the RMFC therefore came as a shock.
The RMFC said a senator receives a salary of N168,866.70 with allowances.
He listed the allowances as motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance (N126,650.00), personal assistant (N42,216.66), domestic staff (N126,650.00), entertainment (N50,660.00), utilities (N50,660.00), newspapers/periodicals (N25,330.00), wardrobe (N42,216.66), house maintenance (N8,443.33), and constituency allowance (N422,166.66) which totals to N1,063,860.00.
