Sanwo-Olu approves Yoruba language as exam subject for Lagos schools

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the inclusion of Yoruba language as a compulsory subject in the Universal Basic Education (UBE) and Common Entrance Examination for primary six pupils, starting from the 2024/2025 academic session.

This development was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji.

The meeting was attended by top officials from the Lagos State Examination Board, led by Registrar Mr. Adebayo Orunsolu, as well as representatives from various educational bodies.

The approval is a significant milestone in the efforts to promote and preserve the Yoruba language and culture.

This move is expected to promote the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and preserve the language for future generations.

The Ẹgbẹ́ Akọ́mọlédè àti Àṣà Yorùbá Lagos State Chapter has expressed gratitude to the Commissioner of Education, Honourable Jamiu Ali-Balogun, and other officials for their support in making this initiative a success.

The implementation of this decision is expected to commence in the 2024/2025 academic session, with the Lagos State Examination Board working closely with stakeholders to develop the curriculum and examination framework.
