Over 1400 protesters held as NBA faces legal aid row

Over 1,400 #EndBadGovernance demonstrators have been detained, sparking concerns about their welfare and access to justice,civil rights groups have said.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Irohinoodua learnt is facing significant challenges in providing legal aid to the detainees.
Information gathered that data on those arrested remain scanty promoting fears of their plight.
The #EndBadGovernance 10-day protests, began in response to perceived systemic failures and corruption.
Activists claim a significant escalation in detentions especially the Northern part of the country without legal representation or opportunity for trial
Legals sources said over 1,400 protesters are currently being held in various facilities amidsts calls from Amnesty International for a fair trial.
The NBA has stepped in to provide legal assistance to the detained protesters, recognizing the importance of upholding their rights.
However, Irohinodua learnt that the association is facing formidable challenges of comprehensive data on the detainees, including their names and charges.
“The delayed provision of legal aid can have severe consequences for the detainees” A Lawyer told Irohinodua.
The lawyer who wants to be anonymous further said, “The NBA, human rights organizations, and civil society must collaborate assist the detainees as many awaits trial.
“The detention of over 1,400 #EndBadGovernance protesters raises grave concerns about Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
“The NBA’s efforts to provide legal aid are commendable, but the challenges they face underscore the need for collective action. It is imperative that we work together to ensure the detainees receive timely legal assistance, and their rights are protected”
Kano state saw the highest number of arrests at 832, including 600 alleged rioters, 76 for displaying Russian flags, and others for looting and curfew violations. Sokoto had 110 arrests, with many protesters still languishing in prison after summary hearings before a mobile court.
