By Samuel Ogunsona
Scores of protesters have been arrested by the police following the protests for Yoruba self determination held in Lagos today.
Legal adviser Ilana Omo Oodua Mr Supo Ojo said many protesters were accosted and detained by the Lagos police.
He said “Information reaching us is that many participants who came for the rally in buses from outside Lagos have been arrested and detained with their buses at various police stations in the Ojota, Ikeja, Agege, Maryland and Ojodu axis.”
Olasupo Ojo called on the Lagos Commisioner of Police to order their release to enable them return home today without further delay.
He expressed fears that those arrested may be detained without the knowledge of their loved ones.
Meanwhile the police has dismissed reports that a 14 year old girl was killed by the command
A statement issued by the Lagos Police Command and made available to Irohinoodua said the reports were false. The police said the said corpse of a lady was found distant from the venue of the rally adding that the blood stains were not fresh and that a wound on her body suggested no clue that she was a gun shot victim. The Lagos police said they did not fire life bullets at the rally
Ilana Omo O’odua said the rally inspite of disruption by the police was a success.
A Lagos official of the group, Femi Odusote told Irohinoodua that said thousands of people in Lagos would have attended the rally of not for the blockade mounted by the police at the various entry points.
“We had a successful outing. The turnout was impressive. It shows that Yoruba people are ready to confront evil even at the risk of their lives” he said.
