Ogun seeks military base to combat rising crime

By Ologeh Joseph Chibu

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called for the establishment of a military base in the eastern part of the South West state.

Abiodun said it would address the growing security challenges.

Nigeria is bedevilled by violent crimes which has fuelled calls for State Police instead of military base since the military compared with the police are less trained to curtailed crime.

Experts link the tempo to the region’s expanding commercial activities. The request was made during a meeting with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Farooq Mijinyawa

The meeting held at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.

Abiodun highlighted that the eastern region, which has seen rapid economic growth with developments such as the state’s new airport, is also facing an uptick in criminal activities. He said a permanent military presence would help address these issues more effectively.

“The level of commercial activities in the eastern part of the state is increasing, and this is accompanied by a rise in criminal activities,” Abiodun explained. “We need a Forward Operation Base there to help us maintain peace and order.”

The governor emphasized that proactive security measures are crucial in this area, especially with criminals potentially migrating from neighboring states. He noted that the presence of a military base would not only deter criminal elements but also allow for quicker responses to security incidents.

Governor Abiodun expressed concern that escalating crime could harm the state’s investment climate, as news of insecurity might discourage potential investors. He pointed out that visible and effective security measures are essential to ensure continued economic growth and stability in Ogun State.

He also praised the Nigerian Army for their swift interventions in other parts of the state, particularly in Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, where they have successfully responded to security threats. The governor assured the visiting GOC that his administration would provide the necessary support to facilitate the establishment of a military base, including logistical assistance.

“Having a permanent military presence, especially around the Remo axis, would allow the Army to respond quickly to security challenges,” Abiodun added, stressing the strategic importance of the region for the state’s economy.

Major General Mijinyawa expressed gratitude for the governor’s ongoing support, particularly for the welfare of soldiers’ families and logistical backing provided by the state government. He reassured the governor that the Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the security of Ogun State.

“I have instructed my officers and men to intensify their efforts to uphold the peace and security of Ogun State,” Mijinyawa said.

The governor’s request for a military base underscores Ogun State’s commitment to enhancing security, particularly as the state experiences increased commercial activities and the challenges that come with them. By bolstering the region’s security infrastructure, the state aims to protect its growing economy and maintain a stable environment for investment.
