No room for Sharia in Yorubaland, says top Muslim leader

A prominent Islamic Scholar, Sheik Abdurahman Adenuga, who once lived in Saudi Arabia and speaks the Saudi dialect has ruled out the prospect of Sharia in Yoruba territories plus Edo, Delta, Kwara and Kogi States.

He spoke in a clip made available to Irohinoodua.

The Sultan of Sokoto Abubakar is leading the call for Sharia in Yorubaland.

The Sultan has come under strong criticisms from Yoruba Muslims and Christians saying his plot was to destabilise Yorubaland

Sheik Adenuga emphasized that Yorubaland is a multicultural and multireligious society, with approximately 27 million Christians, 23 million Muslims, and 10 million traditional worshippers.

He noted that the introduction of Sharia law would disrupt the peaceful coexistence of these groups.

“In South west, we understand that some celebrate traditional festivals (Eegun and the likes), Christians celebrate Christmas and Easter while we Muslims celebrate Ramadan and Ileya,” Sheik Adenuga explained.

“If some of us in South West now decide that they want to bring Sharia into Yoruba land, which literally means we will start fighting women who refuse to cover her hair, there will be a war against alcohol or places where they take it. Yoruba land cannot accept such law.” He mentioned

The Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar, has been leading the call for Sharia law in Yorubaland, but his efforts have been met with strong criticism from Yoruba Muslims and Christians, who accuse him of trying to destabilize the region.
