Nigerian Chief Justice resigns

By Bola Alebiosu

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammad Tanko may have resigned. Sources at the judiciary said he stepped aside on Monday. The CJ was put under the scathing searchlight by his colleagues who raised issues bordering on welfare and accountability.
14 Judges of the Supreme Court had written a petition to the CJN complaining about lack of welfare. They also accused Tanko of neglecting their needs why promoting his own personal interest. He came unto the seat in 2020. It was the first time Judges of the Supreme Court would come out to speak so vehemently against any Chief Justice of Nigeria in the over 60 years existence of the judicial institution.
In part, the protest of the 14 Judges reads “In the past, Justices were nominated to attend two to three foreign workshops and trainings per annum with an accompanying person for reasons of age.”
The Judges wrote “Since Your Lordship’s assumption of office, Justices only attended two workshops in Dubai and Zanzibar. They were not accorded the privilege of travelling with accompanying persons as was the practice’ adding that the CJN totally ignored the demand and yet travelled with his spouse, children and personal staff.
