Newsbreak: Tinubu signs new minimum wage bill into law

By Samuel Ogunsona

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the minimum wage into law.

This is coming ahead of the August planned protest and widespread hunger and tensed atmosphere.

President Tinubu signed the bill at the State House in Abuja on Monday days after the National Assembly had passed the bill.

His move aimed at addressing the growing discontent among Nigerian workers and the country’s bleeding economy.

President Tinubu’s decision was made amidst a tense atmosphere, as Nigerian youths gathered to protest against bad governance and the country’s economic woes.

The youths who have been vocal on social media about their demands for better living conditions and improved governance, had threatened to take to their demonstration to the streets on August 1, 2024.

However, after months of back and forth between Nigerian Government and the National Labour Congress, NLC, the President in Abuja increased the federal government’s offer on the national minimum wage from N62,000 to N70,000, with an assurance that it will be reviewed after three years, instead of the usual five years.

The National Assembly delegation led by the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and some members of the House of Representatives were around to witness the event in Abuja.
