Newsbreak: Renown historian, Prof Obaro Ikimi is dead

One of Nigeria’s most celebrated historian, Prof Obaro Ikimi is dead. He died on Tuesday around 5.30pm at Ibadan.

Irohinoodua was informed today that Ikimi died at the University of Ibadan where he had lectured for many years until he retired from active academic duties.

He is one of the most published Nigerian historians.

He his survived by children and many grandchilden

Famiy sources said burial arrangements would be announced soon

He is also survived by his wife of some 60 years, Hannah and his two sons, Mazino, Maino and a daughter, Majiro

He holds Bachelor of Arts, Post Graduate Diploma and a Ph.D.

He is one of Africa’s most celebrated Professor of History.

Born on December 30, 1936, Ikimi hails from ErohwaIga, Isoko South,

His wife, Hannah is Itsekiri. They married in 1962

He attended St Phillips C.M.S School,Burutu, 1947; St. Andrew’s C.M.S School, Warri, 1948-50; Warri College, Warri, 1950-56; University College Ibadan, now University oflbadan, 1956-64; Immanuel College ofTheology,Ibadan 1992-95, Lecturer, University of lbadan, 1964-65; Lecturer II,1965-67; Lecturer 1,1967-69.

He became a senior lecturer, 1969-73 and Professor of History, 1973-
