Newsbreak: Nigeria launches bid to host COP32 in 2027

By Samuel Ogunsona

Nigeria has officially kicked off discussions to host the 32nd Conference of Parties (COP32) in 2027, as Africa prepares to host the global climate summit for the second time in five years.

The move follows Egypt’s successful hosting of COP27 in 2022.

The discussions gained momentum with the arrival of Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), who met with Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, in Abuja.

The meeting aimed to strengthen partnerships and enhance Nigeria’s participation in global climate negotiations.

According to the Federal Ministry of Environment, hosting COP32 would offer Nigeria several strategic benefits, including emphasizing priority areas in climate action at both continental and national levels.

“Hosting COP would boost climate leadership, global visibility & economic opportunities,” the ministry stated.

Minister Lawal emphasized that hosting COP32 would position Nigeria as a key player in shaping the future of climate action across Africa and beyond.

“This represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s climate leadership on the global stage,” he said.

The bid to host COP32 comes ahead of COP30, scheduled to take place in Belem, Brazil.

If successful, Nigeria’s hosting of COP32 would mark a significant milestone in the country’s environmental diplomacy and potentially accelerate climate investments across West Africa.
