The Federal Government of Nigeria has postponed the launch of the students loan scheme indefinitely.
The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyer, on Tuesday morning during an interview on Arise TV monitored by Irohinodua.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier said the students’ loan scheme would be launch on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
Meanwhile, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Presidential Chief of Staff (CoS), Femi Gbajabiamila,
had initially proposed September/October, 2023 deadline to launch the students loan scheme.
However, Sawyer had come out on TV to announce that the government will not be able to commit a specific date for the commencement of the project just barely 24hours before the launch of the student loan scheme.
He said, “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to commit to a specific date. We are sort of waiting to ensure that all the stakeholders are aligned to make sure that nobody is blindsided, then we can actually roll this out in a meaningful, comprehensive, wholesome and sustainable way,”.
He added that some corrections that were being made around the launch would delay the launch of the students loan scheme.
