Newsbreak: Brazil appoints veteran Climate diplomat André Corrêa do Lago as COP30 president

Brazil has appointed André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, a seasoned climate diplomat, to lead the COP30 UN climate summit in Belém, Amazon.

The event holds from November 10 to 21, 2025. Irohinoodua has been invited to the event as part of the very few media from across Africa.

Corrêa do Lago has been serving as Secretary for Climate, Energy, and Environment at Brazil’s foreign ministry and as Brazil’s chief climate negotiator since 2023.

With a career spanning over two decades, Corrêa do Lago has worked on sustainable development issues since 2001.

He has previously held the same role between 2011 and 2013 and has served as Brazilian ambassador to India and Japan. Notably, he is also a well-regarded architecture critic and curator.

Corrêa do Lago will be the fifth consecutive male COP President and the 25th male president out of 30. Ana Toni, Secretary of Climate Change at the Brazilian environment ministry, will take on the role of COP30 CEO and Executive Director, while Environment Minister Marina Silva will not have a formal role.

The COP30 summit aims to address pressing climate issues, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, and promoting sustainable development. As the host city, Belém is undergoing significant preparations, including infrastructure investments and urban development projects.
