Newsbreak: Armed herdsmen shoot State Commisioner in Yoruba area of Kogi, kidnap travellers

Armed men suspected to be of Fulani extraction have shot a State Commissioner in Kogi State. The armed men also kidnapped travellers after laying siege on the road.

The incidence took place at Ikoyi village in Ijumu local government area of Kogi State.

Local sources said the armed Fulani men numbering more than twenty kidnapped travelers after shooting at a State Commissioner, Hon Ade Omofaiye who escaped with bullet wounds.

The incidence took place 5.10pm on Sunday.

The Commissioner is said to be recuperating at a hospital in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital.

Local sources said the Ikoyi-Ijumu Development Association (IDA) leadership has asked vigilantes and local security groups to comb the forests in search of the armed groups.

“They were armed Fulani men. There were about 20 of them.They stormed Ikoyi area, took over the highway and shot at anything in sight. The Commissioner was wounded. They shot him in his leg. The armed men kidnapped some travellers” Abdul Meduna a native of Iyara told Irohinoodua. He said armed Fulani have been very active in the area kidnapping people for ransom. He said police in Ikoyi area are working with local security operatives to ensure the arrest of the armed herdsmen.
