Newsbreak: Akeredolu hits PDP in final knock out
By Samuel Ogunsona
The Governor of Ondo State Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu has been affirmed as the legitimate winner of the Ondo State gubernatorial election. The election was held in October 2020.
This brings to an end months of legal fireworks after the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) challenged the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) victory at the controversial poll.
Today, the Supreme Court upheld Akeredolu’s election.
The PDP candidate Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, had secured knock outs since the trial began at the lower Tribunal.
Today’s judgment brings to an end anxiety on both sides, though the PDP has to lick its wound until the next election billed for 2024.
In today’s judgment, majority of the judges in the jidgment read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, upheld Akeredolu’s election.
They hinged his victory on the basis that Jegede’s appeal had no merit.
His technical error was that he failed to include the Yobe State Governor and current Chairman caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress, Mai Mala Buni, as party in the suit.
Justice Mary Peter-Odili, who is the lead Judge said Mai should have been included in the suit being a principal in the APC. This was apart from other grounds on the basis of which the Supreme Court put a bitter end to PDP’s pursuit.
