NAFDAC uncover counterfeit products worth N50m in Abuja store

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has discovered fake prouducts worth N50m in a store in Abuja.

This was after the agency raided a store at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The operation took place in Garki, Wuse, Utako, Kugbo, Nyanya, and Mararaba.

The agency on its X page at the weekend disclosed that popular supermarkets in Abuja (Sahad and H-Medix store) in Wuse 2 and Gwarinpa respectively were among the raided stores.

NAFDAC said during the operation, counterfeit cosmetics were discovered and seized at Sahad Stores, H-Medix, and various markets, while fake drugs were confiscated at Utako market.

“Counterfeit NIVEA products, cosmetics, Jik bleach, Harpic toilet cleaner, and Airwick room freshener were all confiscated. The total value of the seized goods amounted to N50 million, with fake NIVEA products alone valued at N45 million,” NAFDAC said in a statement made available to Irohinoodua.

The agency also mentioned that counterfeit cosmetics were discovered and seized in some local stores while
fake drugs were confiscated at the popular Utako market.

Mr. Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, Head of Investigation and Enforcement/Federal Taskforce, FCT, Abuja, who emphasized the health risk of this fake products said it saddens to witness the sale of substandard products, particularly counterfeit NIVEA cream which was being sold at a higher price than the approved products.

He also noted that such counterfeit goods carry the risk of cancer, kidney damage, and skin rashes.

The agency maintained that it stands to root out counterfeit syndicates and safeguard public health.
