The Nigerian military announced on Friday that it may intervene to stem the ongoing looting of goods by some protesters.
Thousands of Nigerians have gone to the streets to condemn shuffling economic policies of the ruling authorities code names #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.
The statement by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, made available to Irohinoodua was released on Friday in Abuja.
General Musa emphasized that the Army are fully supporting the police in their efforts to stem violence.
“Our forces are on standby. The police are managing the situation effectively at the moment,” General Musa stated
He said further that the Army “are supporting the police all through. We are just on standby. The police is doing a good job; they are handling the situation for now.”
He said should the situation escalate beyond the police control, the military is prepared to step in.
“We are monitoring the situation around the clock. Unless it breaches beyond what they can handle, then the military will step in. The military is on standby and we are watching day and night.”
Nigerians in several thousands trooped out to protest against high cost of living and a sky-bound inflation, the worst in three decades.
The protest started on Thursday and is expected to continue to 10 days.
