LASG announces closure of landfills for waste management

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to decommission two major landfills, Olusosun and Solous 3, within the next 15 months.

According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the landfills will be transformed into modern Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) where waste will be sorted, compacted, and redirected to recycling and recovery facilities.

“We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and aligning Lagos with global best practices in waste management,” Wahab said.

“The closure of these landfills is a significant step towards achieving our goal of sustainable waste management.”

As part of this initiative, the Lagos State Government will also establish new Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in Ikorodu and Badagry, in partnership with Jospong Group (ZoomLion Nigeria).

These facilities will maximize resource recovery and reduce landfill waste.

Wahab emphasized that the plan to close the landfills is part of a broader waste management initiative introduced at the start of the current administration’s THEMES agenda.

“We are working towards a future where Lagos is free from the negative impacts of improper waste management,” he said.

The Lagos State Government’s efforts to improve waste management have been ongoing. Recently, the Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Africa Plc to address the state’s mounting waste challenges through sustainable waste management initiative.

However, the Government has secured a €120 million support fund from the Dutch Government to enhance its waste-to-energy project.
