The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has shut down the Ikeja Golf Club, citing negligence and a serious disregard for public safety.
In a statement made available to Irohinoodua LASBCA’s Director of Public Affairs,Adu Ademuyiwa said the closure was prompted by numerous safety complaints regarding the club’s operations.
“The Lagos State Building Control Agency has taken decisive action by sealing off the Ikeja Golf Club at Oba Akinjobi Way, GRA, after several incidents of negligence raised concerns about the public, safety of lives and property damage,” the statement revealed.
This closure follows repeated complaints, including a recent incident where a golf ball struck a LASBCA staff member on the agency’s Ikeja Headquarters premises.
Additionally, stray golf balls have caused damage to vehicles in the vicinity, with reports indicating that the club’s management has repeatedly ignored requests to implement necessary safety measures, such as protective netting and modified play areas.
Expressing his frustration, LASBCA General Manager Gbolahan Oki condemned the club’s management and players for their apparent indifference to public safety. “It is concerning to witness such negligence from a reputable establishment. Persistent disregard for safety regulations is unacceptable, particularly when it puts lives and property at risk,” Oki stated.
He emphasized that the club’s failure to adopt preventive measures violates safety regulations and reaffirmed LASBCA’s commitment to safeguarding residents and visitors from avoidable hazards. The Ikeja Golf Club will remain closed until adequate safety measures are put in place.
