The Lagos State Government has launched a programme to rename some non indigenous street names in Lagos.
Authorities say the initiative is to promote indigenous values and heritage of Lagos State in the face of erosion of the city’s history.
“We have to do this. We are giving hope to Lagos indigenous values and heritage. We need to protect the identity and culture of Lagos. We are going to change foreign names to indigenous names while names given to questionable characters will be changed. We are also going to change names that were awarded through corrupt officials without any bearing to the land,” a top official told Irohinoodua.
The official who does not wish to be named said many of the names being changed were imposed on the people especially during the military era without any relevance to the history of such territories.
Some of the names changed are
- Imo Eze Street to Layiwola Oluwa
- Oyikere Street to Yeye Iretiola
- George Street to Daddy Showkey
- Uzor Street to Kalejaiye Adeboye
- Agbe Street to Bayewu Kamal
- Emordi Street to Ayoola Fatai
- Osho Drive to Musibau Oluwa among many others.
A statement signed by an official of Ajeromi Ifelodun indicated 24 streets affected in the Council area alone
