I called him Lagbasky

By Maj Gen J.J OGUNLADE (rtd)

Lagbasky stands out as one of the most seasoned field commanders in the Nigerian Army. His extensive service across various conflict zones in the country equipped him with invaluable experience and I have had the honour of collaborating with him on numerous operations. His exceptional skills as an infantry soldier and his remarkable prowess as a paratrooper highlight a profound dedication to his responsibilities. This unwavering commitment not only showcases his professionalism but also underscores the immense pride he takes in fulfilling his duties. His unparalleled expertise in infantry operations stands him out as a soldier of remarkable caliber. His steadfast devotion to his role is a testament to his character, revealing a deep-seated pride that fuels his performance and inspires those around him.
One of the most remarkable experiences I shared with Lagbasky was during our time together in 72 Para Battalion, as well as in our service as staff officers at Army Headquarters. During this period, we engaged in countless discussions and brainstorming sessions aimed at addressing the numerous challenges confronting the Nigerian Army. His analytical skills and strategic thinking were instrumental in navigating complex situations, showcasing his exceptional intellect.
Lagbasky’s ability to tackle problems with innovative solutions is truly impressive. His contributions not only enhance operational effectiveness but also inspire those around him to strive for excellence. It is this combination of experience, intellect, and dedication that makes him a respected leader and a vital asset to the Nigerian Army.
It is with a heavy heart that I endeavour to honour the legacy of this remarkable leader, a devoted and steadfast commander whose life was marked by an unwavering commitment to duty, a rare depth of courage, and a firm sense of responsibility. I remember not just a soldier, but a person who embodied loyalty and strength, someone whose presence commanded respect and whose actions inspired trust.
Throughout his career, he faced every challenge with determination and an unbreakable will. Whether on the battlefield, in training or as a staff officer, he was a beacon of resilience and dedication, showing us all what it meant to be truly committed to a cause greater than oneself.
He held his ground in the most testing moments, a testament to his strength and dedication to his country and his comrades. A leader not only in rank but in spirit, he guided his troops with wisdom and integrity, always leading from the front and motivating all those who served with him.
His battle with illness was met with the same courage he brought to the battlefield, fighting with grace and resilience until the end. Though the illness may have taken you from us, but it could never diminish the legacy you leave behind, a legacy of bravery, integrity, and honour that will forever echo in the lives you touched and in the hearts of those you inspired.
I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find solace in the knowledge that he lived a life of honour and service.

Let us honour his memory by carrying forward his ideals, striving for success, and upholding the values he so dearly cherished.

Lagbasky, you served with honor until the very end. Rest in peace, brave soldier. Your sacrifice dedication, loyalty, and courage will never be forgotten. All the way airborne jump master. Adieu
