The young man who surged at President Mohammadu Buhari in Kebbi state today posed no danger to the Nigerian leader, the Special Adviser on media to the President Mr Femi Adesinan has said.
In a video that has gone viral, a man in a brown native dress rushed at the President who was standing with dignitaries including the Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. Security operatives quickly encircled the man and whisked him away.
Critics have interpreted the incidence to mean an attack on the President, with some even suggesting the man was armed.
But in his response, Adesina said the man, out of affection actually wanted to hug the President but was prevented by security operatives.
Adesina said “A young man was very excited to see his President at the Argungu fishing festival. He made to walk straight to him for a handshake. Security details prevented it. Now, opposite people are passing it off as an attempt to attack the President. How malicious can people be.”
However, some insist the action of the man was an indication that the President was vulnerable and that the close shave should be blamed on poor security control and lack of adequate intelligence prediction by those responsible for the security of the President.
