June 12: Prof Nwosu is dead

The man who conducted the controversial June 12, 1993 election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu is dead.

The election was believed to have been won by the late Chief M.K.O Abiola

The former Chairman, National Electoral Commission, (NEC) died in Virginia, United States on Thursday.

Prof Nwosu was at the helms of affairs having conducted the 1993 Presidential election which was annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Nwosu’s INEC has already conducted the elections midway before the announcement came that annulled the election.

Nwosu was not directly responsible for the scam having been ordered through a court injunction believed to have bee procured by the military and their protege.

Nwosu was born on 2 October 1941.

He achieved the feat of a Professor of Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He served an official in the Government of former Governor Samson Omeruah, of the old Anambra State.

He was responsible for assisting traditional institutions and resolving disputes among communities.

He was also the Chairman, Federal Technical Committee on the application of Civil Service Reforms in the local government service.

He was appointed NEC chairman in 1989 after his predecessor (and former mentor) Eme Awa resigned from the government of military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida.
