The Conservative Party is pushing for immigrants to wait for at least 15 years before they could become British citizens.
This is coming on the heels of nationalisn spreading across Europe and America.
The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch announced the new plans to make it more challenging for immigrants to obtain British citizenship.
According to the proposal of the Conservatives, immigrants would need to wait 15 years before applying for citizenship, a significant increase from the current six-year waiting period .
The Conservative Party also suggested that indefinite leave to remain, which is a prerequisite for citizenship, should not be granted to individuals with criminal records or those who have claimed benefits or social housing.
She emphasized that British citizenship is a privilege, not a right, and should be reserved for those with a “meaningful connection to the UK”
This policy shift has raised intense debate, with some critics accusing Badenoch of being anti-immigrant and others arguing that the changes are necessary to ensure the integrity of the UK’s immigration system.
Labour minister Angela Eagle dismissed the proposal, stating that “after 14 years of shameful Tory failure, no one will take seriously anything they claim”
