No fewer than five policemen may have been killed by oil thieves in the Isawo Area of Ikorodu on Monday. The hoodlums disappeared with the bodies of the policemen, witnesses said.
Sources told IrohinOodua that the hoodlums opened fire on the policemen who had stopped a tanker loaded with fuel in the Isawo Area of Ikorodu on Monday. Eye witnesses said the policemen stopped the tanker not knowing it was accompanied by armed Ijaw youths numbering about 15.
The source said that earlier the hoodlums had settled the police authority in the area with #300,000 but that as soon as the tanker left the area, another set of policemen accosted the tanker drivers and demanded for N100,000 settlement for illegal lifting of oil.
The source told our correspondent “When they realized the tanker drivers were not ready to settle them, the policemen started shooting.” He said the tanker drivers called the Ijaw boys who dominate the gang in charge of the illegal oil lifting, to rescue them.
“The Ijaw youths came in another vehicle loaded with sophisticated weapons and wasted the lives of the policemen. The number of policemen killed should be about 5. One of the police officers escaped,”the source said adding that the bodies of the slain policemen were taken away by the Ijaw youths.
When our correspondent visited the area this afternoon, soldiers were seen parading the area. One of the soldiers confirmed the story in a chat with out correspondent adding that the number of policemen killed should not be less than five.
