Victor Olaiya, 89 is dead

Highlife music maestro, Pa Victor Olaiya has passed on. He died that the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idiaraba in Lagos on Wednesday. He was aged 89.

Sources told Irohinoodua that the musician was taken to the hospital following complications relating to old age. The source said he gave up the ghost at exactly 12noon. He was surrounded by relations, friends and children when he breathed his last.

Olaiya who hailed from Ijesa Isu in Ekiti state dominated the music world for several decades. He was one of the few colonial era musicians that survived many of his peers.

About a decade ago, he won a life long award from the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, the first time he would be honoured by his own people. Irohinoodua heard that the family is expected to make official statement by Thursday.
