FG approves new University of Technology for Ekiti State

The Federal Government has approved a new University of Technology for Ekiti State.

The Senate after exhaustive debate, approved the University to be sited at Iyin-Ekiti, the hometown of the first Governor of Western Region, General Robert Adebayo whose son, Niyi Adebayo became the first civilian Governor of Ekiti State.

The new University will address technology, environmental sciences knowledge.

Irohinodua was informed that the construction of the new Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin- Ekiti, Ekiti State will begin soon

It is also expected to enrich Ekiti Knowledge Zone.

Sources said the State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi and other political leaders in the state were instrumental to the the initiative.

The Senate presided over by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Bara Jubrin send the bill, sponsored by Senator Bamodele Opeyemi for the establishment of the school to the Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for expeditious action.

The new University is also expected to boost trade, artisan skills and technological development in Ekiti State, known for her vast human resource base in Education and Science.

The process for the establishment of the University began in the ninth National Assembly.

It effort was renewed this month.

Bamidele said the bill “is to create more access to university education in view of a large number of qualified candidates, who are annually stranded in attempts to gain admission into the universities of their choice across the federation.

Speaking further, he said “are, first and foremost, to set up an ultra-modern institution that will develop world-class technologists as well as human resources that can sustainably manage our nation’s economy by providing technical and management expertise at the highest level.”

He said the the university, when fully established as proposed, will definitely advance knowledge through edge-cutting research and nurture unique technological innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth management in its core areas of specialisation.

“The enactment of this bill will help in transforming the technological and educational fortune in producing the desired manpower and expertise that Nigeria is yearning for to exponentially speed up our economic growth and ensure sustainable development.”
