The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advance the incorporation of the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) into the ongoing constitutional review process to ensure legal recognition.
The Special Adviser on Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement,
Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen revealed this development in a statement released on Monday.
Irohinoodua was informed that this decision stemmed from resolutions reached during the 18th edition of the Executive/Legislative parley organized by the Office of Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement, themed “Engaging All for an Inclusive Governance: Hands on for a Greater Lagos Rising.”
Established in 2003, the 37 LCDAs were formed from the 20 constitutionally recognized local government areas of Lagos State. However, their status remains incomplete as they are not formally listed in the Nigerian Constitution.
Tajudeen noted that the parley attendees emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts among the executive, National Assembly representatives from Lagos, and state legislators to advocate for a “Special Status” for Lagos during the ongoing constitutional review process.
The two-day parley, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, also emphasized enhancing the existing harmonious relationship among all arms of government through mutual recognition and respect for their constitutional mandates.
Moreover, participants agreed on the importance of raising awareness and educating citizens about the roles and significance of each arm of government. Tajudeen stressed the imperative for political officeholders to prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal interests and ambitions while fulfilling their constitutional duties.
He further emphasized the importance of upholding the principles, philosophy, and manifesto of political parties in governance, along with fostering a tripartite relationship among the executive, legislature, and the populace as the foundation of effective governance.
‘’Due consideration should be accorded the party, its philosophy and manifesto in governance and the tripartite relationship among the executive, legislature and the people as it is the only platform for elective office,” he emphasized.
