The Federal Government may proscribe the Pan Yoruba group, Ilana Omo Oodua.
The Yoruba self determination group is led by Professor of History and Senator under the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, (UPN) Prof Stephen Banji Akintoye.
An aide to the Minister of Justice, Abbakar Malami gave the hint at the weekend.
He said the central government was considering banning Ilana to stem the group’s agitation for self determination.
Malami’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Umar Gwandu made this statement when he had a chat with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday.
Gwandu also dismissed claims that President Mohammadu Buhari was not prosecuting terrorists.
The Nigerian government sees Ilana as an organisation that wants to break up Nigeria but its leaders insist the demand for Yoruba seld determination is within the purview of international laws and conventions.
In 2020, Ilana Omo Oodua took Yoruba Nation to the membership of United Nations Unrepresented Peoples, (UNPO) opening up a new chapter of recognition in the annals of the group’s engagement of the international community.
Also on September 14 this year, Ilana Omo Oodua is billed to organise joint rally with the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, (IPOB) The rally has been scheduled for New York and Washington to coincide with the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly
