Breaking: Tinubu, Governors agree to establish state police

President Bola Tinubu and Governors of the 36 states have on Thursday agreed to establish state police in swift response to national insecurity challenges.This is the first time in modern Nigerian history that a President will take one of the most fundamental decisions that will reshape the future of Africa’s most populous country..Nigeria has been plagued by insecurity which requires drastic solutions that successive leaders have ignored

This milestone agreement came during an emergency meeting summoned by the President at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, who disclosed this to journalists said several other meetings will be held to calibrate the modalities for state policing in every state. Irohinoodua was informed that a committee will be set up to work with the National Assembly for a speedy transformation of the police architecture.

He said, “But now, there is also a discussion around the issue of state police. The federal government and state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police.

“Of course, this is still going to be further discussed, a lot of work still has to be done in that direction. But what the federal government and state governments are agreeing to the necessity of having state policy.

“Now, this is a significant shift. But like I said, more works need to be done in that direction. A lot of meetings will have to happen between different government and sub nationals to see the modalities of achieving this” he stated.
