Armed men abduct Swiss, driver in Ogun State

By Samuel Ogunsona

A Switzerland citizen has been abducted alongside his driver in Ogun state.

Local sources said the abductors were armed herdsmen.

The incidence took place along Ibese-Itori road on Sunday at twilight.

A source told irohinodua that after several attempts by the police officers attached to the farm in that area to resist the ambush, the kidnappers abducted the man of Switzerland origin and his driver.

The police officer escorting the Swiss national from Ilaro was Inspector Hassan Kumode. The Swiss is an expatriate with Olabel Farms located in Ogun State.

Kidnapping has continued to rear its head in the South West. The Police are said to lack adequate funding while the required motivation is absent. Political authorities in the South West insist on decentralisation of the country’s security architecture, a call ignores by the central government.

Ogun State Police Public Relation Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the security operatives are in search of the kidnappers and are on top of the situation to ensure prompt arrest of the criminals.

Oyeyemi said “I am aware of the incident. The victims went to their farm around Ibese and on their way back, gunmen attacked them.

He said the policemen, who were with Swiss and his driver, displayed rare bravery.

“They killed two of the kidnappers and recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with nine pieces of ammunition from them.

“But in the process, two of the people were injured and were taken to hospitals.
“One died because he was taken to about four hospitals and was rejected because of lack of bed space; he was taken to the FMC and while receiving treatment, he unfortunately died.

He further said “The kidnappers went away with a Swiss national and one other person. The policemen did not want to increase the collateral damage, because if they had continued to engage the hoodlums, they might have lost the victims. So, we are still on their trail and making efforts to ensure that those people are rescued unhurt.”

Oyeyemi is confident that the Police operatives will capture the kidnappers and bring them to Justice.
