Adoption of Petroleum gas path to cleaner energy, rural development says NLNG

By Ologeh Joseph Chibu

The adoption of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in rural areas will lead to cleaner energy and a safer environment, the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) said on Wednesday.

NLNG called for greater awareness among consumers, particularly in rural regions to increase its adoption and mitigate the danger associated with high-risk alternative energy.

NLNG’s General Manager of Finance, Mrs. Fatima Adanan advanced this during the National Oil Companies Forum at the 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES).

NLNG was incorporated as a Limited Liability Company on May 17, 1989, to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources and produce Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) for export. The establishment of NLNG as a company is backed by the Nigeria LNG Fiscal Incentives, Guaranties and Assurances Act.

Adanan highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive campaign aimed at transitioning biomass users to LPG for cooking.

She said the objective is to elevate LPG usage in Nigeria thereby reshaping the current energy landscape and foster deeper integration of LPG into households.

Adanan pointed out that Nigeria’s total market consumption of LPG stands at approximately 1.5 million metric tons with substantial potential for growth.

NLNG, contributing close to 500,000 metric tons, is dedicated to fulfilling the market demand by supplying 100% of its LPG production domestically, she said.

In addition to ensuring availability, she said NLNG is committed to maintaining competitive pricing and facilitating transactions in the local currency, Naira.

Adanan expressed NLNG’s willingness to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance LPG utilization, encouraging indigenous companies to actively participate in distribution networks and bolster the value chain.

Emphasizing NLNG’s commitment to promoting LPG as a superior and eco-friendly cooking fuel, Adanan reiterated the company’s focus on safeguarding consumers and the environment from the hazards associated with alternative fuels, aligning with its environmental safety objectives.

Shell Explores Strategies for Unleashing Africa’s Energy Potential

Shell advocates for unlocking Africa’s energy potential as a catalyst for energy security, transition, and economic development through strategic partnerships, technological innovation, and sustainable financing.

Addressing a ministerial panel session on “Navigating the new energy world order: Security, Transition, and Finance” at the 7th Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director of The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to advancing energy security, transition, and economic prosperity in Africa.

Okunbor highlighted the significance of international partnerships in accessing best practices, advanced technologies, and innovations to optimize operations and mitigate emissions. He cited the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) as an example deployed by SPDC and SNEPCo to monitor and reduce methane emissions from their operations.

Furthermore, Okunbor emphasized the role of sustainable financing mechanisms such as impact investing and public-private partnerships in facilitating the development of clean energy projects, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering local capabilities.

He underscored the criticality of energy security, transition, and finance in addressing global energy challenges, emphasizing secure and affordable energy access as paramount for economic growth and development, particularly in emerging economies like those in Africa.

Okunbor outlined Shell’s contributions to Africa’s energy sector development, citing its longstanding presence in various countries across the continent. He highlighted Shell’s collaboration with governments, partners, and stakeholders in Nigeria to harness gas as a transition fuel, promote local content development, and deploy renewables for off-grid energy solutions.

Seplat Energy: Gas as Nigeria’s Strategic Transition Fuel

Seplat Energy Plc underscores the importance of gas development as a viable solution to Nigeria’s immediate challenges and a critical transition fuel for the long term.

Addressing the Gas Stakeholders Conversation panel session at the 2024 Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja, Mr. Effiong Okon, Director of New Energy at Seplat Energy, emphasized the pivotal role of gas in addressing Nigeria’s energy needs across various sectors.

Okon highlighted the multifaceted benefits of gas development, including its potential contributions to power generation, LNG exports, CNG production, fertilizer production, LPG production, and building materials production. He emphasized the versatility of gas in addressing pressing issues such as housing and infrastructure shortages, health risks associated with biomass cooking, and the imperative to enhance agricultural productivity.

Drawing on projections from the IEA Global Energy Outlook 2022, Okon stressed the growth potential of natural gas production in Africa, particularly in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, and Mozambique.

To ensure sustainable gas development in Nigeria, Okon emphasized the importance of bankability, access to low-cost capital, technological innovation, and smart metering to minimize losses and optimize revenue collection.

In conclusion, Seplat Energy reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging gas as a strategic transition fuel to drive Nigeria’s economic growth, enhance energy security, and promote sustainability.
