Breaking: FG finally approves N77,000 for corpers

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Federal Government has finally commenced payment of the N77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

This development comes six months after the announcement was made, leaving many corps members disappointed and uncertain about their fate.

“We have received the new allowance of N77,000, and we are relieved that the government has finally fulfilled its promise,” an anonymous corper from Lagos State confirmed to Irohinodua on Wednesday.

The corper expressed gratitude for the increased allowance, which has been a long time coming.

The announcement of the pay increase was made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in September 2024.

However, corps members continued to receive the previous allowance of N33,000, which was introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande had assured that serving corps members and those in the scheme when the increment was announced would receive a backdated payment.

“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it, and they’re asking him a question ‘What about those that are going out now, are they going to receive it [backlog]?’ He said ‘We have your details,'” the minister said

The payment of the new allowance is a welcome development for corps members who have been eagerly awaiting the implementation of the promised increase.

With this new development, corps members can now breathe a sigh of relief and focus on their service to the nation.
