A renowned Nigerian physician and former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has passed away

He died at 72. His death marks the end of a career in public service dotted by a prolonged battle with cancer.

Sources close to the family revealed to Irohinoodua that Dr. Okupe had been critically ill in recent weeks, with his condition deteriorating significantly.

Media reports link his death to complications arising from cancer.

A Life of Service and Political Influence

Born in 1952, Dr. Okupe studied medicine at the University of Ibadan and initially built a career in healthcare before transitioning into politics. Over the years, he played a prominent role in Nigeria’s political landscape, serving in various capacities under different administrations.

He was a Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan and previously served as a spokesperson for former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Known for his outspoken nature and deep political insights, Okupe was a key figure in Nigeria’s political communications and policy advocacy.

His career also saw him take active roles in the campaigns of major political figures, including his brief tenure as the Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in 2022 before stepping down. Throughout his political journey, he remained an influential voice in governance, media, and public affairs.

A Battle with Cancer


Dr. Okupe’s health challenges were longstanding. He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder. In October 2023, he was hospitalized due to severe complications from prostate cancer and was flown to Israel for advanced treatment. Despite medical interventions, his condition continued to decline.

His passing is a significant loss to both the medical and political communities in Nigeria. Colleagues, political associates, and well-wishers have taken to social media and various platforms to express their condolences, remembering him as a man of intellect, resilience, and service.
