By Samuel Ogunsona

Over 190 parties will gather tomorrow this week Tuesday in Rome as negotiations resume under the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16)

The European Union is working towards an agreement on pending decisions made at the last 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) in Cali, Columbia.

The resumed global biodiversity negotiations will focus on crucial issues for implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswall, said, “The EU and its Member States remain fully committed to the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. We are ready to work together with all parties to move forward and build on the progress made in Cali.”

The EU has announced a doubling of its international biodiversity financing to EUR 7 billion for the 2021-2027 period.

The European Commission has also launched initiatives such as the EUR 1.4 billion NaturAfrica initiative to support biodiversity conservation efforts.
