Alaafin to commence 21-day ritual, goes to exclusion

The new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade will today begin the mandatory 21 days seclusion during which he would be compelled by tradition to abstain from food or be on lean diet through compulsory fasting as he embark on all the necessary rituals.

During this period, he will only attend to traditional Oyo historians and a few members of the Oyo Mesi (Traditional Senate) who would be expected to take him through the dos and don’t of an Alaafin.

The Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State already presented Oba Owoade with his Staff and certificate.

Oba Owoade is the 46th Alaafin-elect to sit on the exalted stool of his ancestors.

On Monday, a brief ceremony was held on Monday at the state government house, Agodi,Ibadan where the Governor, Makinde presented the staff of office to the new king.

The solemn event saw many dignitaries in attendance among who were traditional rulers, faith based groups and many government officials.

Speaking at the event, Makinde praised the new Alaafin saying his ascension will lead to a greater Oyo town.

He said the new Alaafin would uphold the cultural and historical heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.

He described him as custodian of rich history and tradition.

He said he was sure the new king will lead his people with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to the unity of the Oyo kingdom.

The new king took over from the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who passed on after decades of leading his people.

The Alaafin thanked the people of Oyo and all those that support him.
