By Ologeh Joseph Chibu

At a summit in the United States, the Senator representing Kaduna South in Nigeria’s National Assembly,
Sunday Marshall Katung, has urged African and Caribbean nations to intensify efforts in tackling shared Climate Change challenges, poverty, and social injustice. He emphasized the need for collective action during his speech at the International Forum of African-Caribbean Leadership (IFA) in New York, which coincided with the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Katung highlighted that both regions face significant risks in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, pointing to the urgency of prioritizing Goal 17, which focuses on global partnerships. He stressed the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach involving all sectors of society to combat poverty, environmental degradation, and ensure sustainable development.

“The current system has fallen short, and we must acknowledge this reality,” Katung stated, calling for a shift towards a more inclusive and participatory democracy. He noted that parliaments must play a crucial role in enacting laws that promote collaboration and hold governments accountable.

He also praised the Open Government Partnership (OGP), a global initiative promoting transparency and accountability in governance, which he described as key to accelerating transformational progress through multi-sector partnerships.

The senator underscored the importance of regional cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean, calling on leaders to prioritize economic growth, social progress, and environmental protection through collaborative efforts.

During the forum, Senator Katung was recognized for his exemplary legislative work with the African Leadership Legislative Excellence Award, presented by Dr. Ken Giami, Founder of African Leadership Magazine. Katung was praised for his dedication to youth development, security, healthcare, and education in Kaduna South. Additionally, the South Carolina State Legislature honored him for his contributions to Nigeria’s growth.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri also received the Best Performing Governor Award, while leaders from politics, business, and industry across Africa and the Caribbean, including Reta Jo Lewis of the U.S. Export-Import Bank and Dr. Kevin Greenidge of the Central Bank of Barbados, were in attendance. The event highlighted the shared vision of strengthening African-Caribbean ties through leadership and innovation.
