Newsbreak: Tinubu re-elected as ECOWAS chairman

The Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS) has appointed President Bola Tinubu as its chairman.

He will spend another 12-months as the chairman of the regional body.

ECOWAS is a 16-member organisation with its Chairman appointed every year.

The President who was expected to step aside as his tenure ended today was re-elected by unanimous decision at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday.

Tinubu was first elected in July 9, 2023, at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

The President during his speech in Abuja said, “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited.”

The endorsement was as a result of trust and confidence reposed in him by his fellow Heads of Government at the 65th session.

On his emergence as Chairman in 2023, his first participation at the summit, having just been elected as the President of Nigeria, He stated that he was humbled and honoured by the trust to assume the leadership of the regional body, pledging his commitment to serve the interest of the community.

However, the President in his the last 12-months as the leader of the regional bloc as played a significant role in promoting democracy in the sub-region.

He also took a strong stance against the unconstitutional changes of government in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea, imposing sanctions on some of these countries.

The sanctions which was later lifted seeks a more peaceful approach and dialogue to promote good democracy.
