2023: Afenifere calls for Unity Govt

By Bola Adigun

The Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere has called for a unity government instead of the proposed 2023 elections.

After its meeting in Ogun State held on Wednesday, Afenifere said the current political system has failed to resolved the lingering political structures especially the National Question.

Afenifere in the Communique signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi said what is needed now is a Government of National Unity.
But there are fears associated with the call. Who sets up the National Unity Government? Will the representatives of elected? How does it conflict with the already elected members of the National Assembly?

The Afenifere’s call also contradicts the stand of some of its top leaders already expressing support for some Presidential aspirants.

“In view of the seriousness of the situation and considering the fact that the present regime under President Buhari has shown that it is incapable and unwilling to tackle the identified problems, Afenifere hereby strongly advocates for a Government of National Unity.

“Such a Government of National Unity is to tackle the insecurity problems and midwife a new democratic government.”

Afenifere also said that states that are prepared should be allowed to implement State police.

It’s is uncertain if the Nigerian Government will ever listen to the ritual of rhetorics that many groups continue to issue without any concrete mass based platform to press home such time honoured demands
